Benefits of a Surface Mount Resistor

This is a mode of getting electronic circuits as the components are directly mounted on the surface of the printed circuit boards. Surface mount resistors have taken over the through – hole technology. It is highly considered because of the following advantages:

1. They have small components.

2. It takes less time in when being set up for production and costs less.

3. Its components can be well placed on either side of the board.

4. The component per unit area has a higher density and even additional connections per component.

5. The surface mount resistor has a faster and simpler automated assembly.

6. Under the vibration and shake conditions, it gives a better mechanical performance.

7. Whenever errors occur in the course of placing the component, they can be automatically corrected. This is made possible since the tension on the surface of the molten solder can pull the parts into the right alignment with the solder pads.

8. You do not have to worry as there are little resistance and inductance present at the desired connection; consequently, the few RF signals that are unwanted and even better and more predictable performance of high quality.

9. A better EMC compatibility (that of low radiation emissions) as a result of small radiation loop area (due to the smaller package) and also the lead inductance that is much smaller.

10. Another fact that is beneficial is that most of the SMT parts are much cheaper in cost as opposed to their equivalent parts of through- holes.

11. It comes in handy in a situation where there is limited space. However, this depends on the layout and the type of circuit. Nevertheless, SMT parts, like pull up
resistors and decoupling capacitors, can be considered in the course of less space needed on the PCB. These elements are known to fit neatly into the gaps between VERO boards and, therefore, can be put together with various designs when you use leaded parts.

12. In any case modification is needed where there was a pre- existing circuit, this is the right thing to consider. This is important when you forget to add a resistor, series capacitor or diode. You have a solution right here, forget about the holes and insert an SMT.

13. Most of the times, drilling holes can be a problem. This is because of the frustrations that come with working on two sides at the same time. This simplifies it because you solder and load them on the same side without causing any interference.
